Warning Signs of a Heart Attack
Don’t wait to get help if you experience any of the following heart attack warning signs. Some heart attacks are sudden and intense, though most start slowly, with mild pain or discomfort. Pay attention to your body and call 911 if you experience any of these symptoms:
- Chest discomfort: Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes. The pain may go away and return. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain.
- Discomfort in other areas of the upper body: Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach.
- Shortness of breath: This can occur with or without chest discomfort.
- Other signs: Include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness.
Strokes have similar warning signs though they can be less physical in nature:
- Numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg
- Confusion
- Trouble speaking or understanding
- Dizziness
- Loss of balance or coordination
- Severe headache with no cause
As with men, women’s most common heart attack symptom is chest pain (angina) or discomfort. But women are somewhat more likely than men to experience some of the other common symptoms, particularly shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting and back or jaw pain.
Minutes matter
Call 911 immediately if you experience any warning signs. Calling 911 is almost always the fastest way to get lifesaving treatment.
Once an emergency medical services (EMS) team arrives at your location, they can begin treatment – up to an hour sooner than if you are driven to the hospital by car. EMS staff also are trained to revive someone whose heart has stopped. Patients with chest pain who arrive by ambulance usually receive faster treatment at the hospital, too.

Know your risk of heart disease. At Adams Memorial Hospital, we offer a way to calculate your risk of developing coronary artery disease (CAD) by measuring the calcified plaque in the coronary arteries. In this scan, our radiology department performs a Computed Tomography (CT) calcium scoring exam, simply known as a CT Heart Smart Scan, which determines the amount of calcium buildup in your coronary arteries.
Risk factors for coronary artery disease:
- High cholesterol
- Diabetes
- Cigarette smoking
- Overweight
- Family history of cardiac disease
- High blood pressure
- Physical inactivity
There is no recommended age for the scan. Patients often request a scan because they have a concern about their health or risk based on their family history. No doctor referral is necessary. Preparation is simple:
- No caffeine for the prior 12 hours
- No food, exercise or smoking four hours prior
- Wear comfortable clothing
The test takes approximately 20 minutes and is pain free. Electrodes are attached to your chest to record electrical activity of the heart. The scan is not covered by insurance; $50 cash payment is due at time of test.
